Project Title: "Luminous Grid"
Abstract
This proposal for an elementary school in Manhattan rethinks conventional school typology through a manipulation of the grid. Situated at the corner of Bleecker Street and Laguardia Place, this project responds to both the grid of the city and that of the surrounding I.M. Pei towers. By pushing and pulling the grid, we created a roof that would perform both environmentally and programmatically, to control daylighting and to define different scales of program. The roof unifies the entire space of the school, within which flexible enclosures slide and shift to engender degrees of openness and closure.
