Online Image Resource List

This list of online resources is intended as a useful reference for Architecture faculty and students who are undertaking image research.  Although it reflects several years' compilation, it [necessarily] remains a work in progress and will be updated periodically as new resources are brought to the Curator's attention.  Useful additions are welcomed.  Please fill out the Comments and Suggestions Form.

Ad*Access Project :  Online image database containing over 7,000 advertisements printed in U.S. and Canadian newspapers and magazines between 1911 and 1955.  


ArchinformOne of the largest online databases for international architecture. Includes images of over 18,000 built and unrealized projects from various architects and planners.


Architectural Archives of the University of Pennsylvania


Art Images for College Teaching:  AICT is a free-use image resource for the educational community.


ArtServe:  Database from the Australian National University featuring art & architecture from the Mediterranean Basin, Japan and India


David Rumsey Visual Collections:  Over 300,000 images from a wide variety of Museums, Universities and private collections. Includes the Catena Digital Archive of Historic Gardens + Landscapes.


Decorative Arts & Design of the 20th Century:  An online database of 20th Century design.


Digital Archive of American Architecture:  Online image database from Boston College. Contains 1400 images of American architecture.

Library of Congress American Memory Project:  Primary source materials relating to the history and culture of the United States. The site offers more than 7 million digital items from more than 100 historical collections.


Earthquake Engineering Online ArchiveIncludes the William Godden Structural Engineering Slide Library, the Karl Steinbrugge Image Collection and the Jan Kozak Collection of Historical Earthquakes from the Earthquake Engineering Research Center at the University of California Berkely.


NYPL Digital GalleryAccess to over 600,000 images digitized from primary sources and printed rarities in the collections of The New York Public Library. Includes coverage of architecture, cityscapes, infrastructure, monuments, and town life.


Perseus Digital Library


SAHARA (formerly Society of Architectural Historians Image Exchange):  A collection of digitized slides of buildings contributed by  (and available to) SAH members for non-profit educational use.  Collection includes a world survey set and an American survey set.
