Princeton Mellon Forum: Cargo

Posted By:

Jesse LeCavalier (NJIT), Janell Rothenberg (UCLA)

12:00pm, South Gallery

Cargo is a material in motion. As part of processes of globalization and economic liberalization, the spaces of cargo are distributed across vast geographies, polities and social experiences. Attention to its materiality raises questions about the landscapes, infrastructure and people that facilitate its movement and passage through disparate sites and economies. The forum brings into conversation two scholars of logistics. Anthropologist Janell Rothenberg will discuss the infrastructure of logistics in the Tangier Mediterranean Port, drawing attention to the managers and workers that mediate how cargo is tracked and contained. Architect and scholar Jesse LeCavalier will examine regional and national networks, discussing the spaces and infrastructure of cargo in the contemporary United States.
