Princeton ARC509 Design/ Builds Open House New York Pavilion

Princeton’s ARC509 Integrated Building Systems class designed and fabricated an installation for the not for profit Open House New York (OHNY).  OHNY commissioned the Kiosk for use in the OHNY Weekend (Oct 17-18th ) in the Union Square Market in NYC as well as for the Launch Party at 11 Times Square.

The OHNY Weekend unlocks the doors to New York’s most important buildings, offering an extraordinary opportunity to experience the city and meet the people who design, build, and preserve New York. From historic to contemporary, residential to industrial, hundreds of sites across the five boroughs are open to visit, with tours, talks, performances and other special events taking place over the course of the Weekend. Through the unparalleled access that it enables, OHNY Weekend deepens our understanding of the importance of architecture and urban design to foster a more vibrant civic life and helps catalyze a citywide conversation about how to build a better New York.

The class, in conjunction with Professor Peter Pelsinski and OHNY director Gregory Wessner, designed, developed, and fabricated the approximately 13’ X 7' Aluminum pavilion over the course of the Spring 2015 semester.  The pavilion spatializes OHNY’s mission in the form of a CNC milled aluminum canopy,the sun illuminating  graphically every site OHNY has ever opened to the public in New York City’s Five Borough   Additionally it can be utilized as a table and as a wall mounted display.  It is a compelling representation of how OHNY operates inside the city and  celebrates the 5 borough-ness of its mission.

The canopy was funded by the Princeton University School of Architecture.
