Hongmei Yao is a registered architect and a Vice Chief Architect at the Architectural Design & Research Institute of Tsinghua University. This is a comprehensive architectural design institute which has an excellent reputation in China. It has mainly undertaken various public and civil architectural engineering designs, urban designs, residential areas planning and dwelling designs, preparation of overall and special urban plans, preparation of detailed plans, protection and restoration of ancient buildings, landscape garden designs, indoor designs, inspection and reinforcement, early-stage feasibility study and architectural programming studies, and engineering consulting.
She is also a director of the Department Three of the Institute, with 60 architects, structural engineers, plumbing engineers, and HVAC and electrical engineers.
In recent years, she has designed more than twenty projects, among which six have won over ten national, provincial, and ministerial Excellent Design Awards in China. Her major projects are as follows: Institute of Information Technology of Tsinghua University, Medicine School of Zhengzhou University, Social Sciences of Zhengzhou University, Beijing Geriatric Hospital, Xuzhou Central Hospital, New Hospital of Tsinghua University, People's Hospital of Tangxian, Baiwang Jasmine residential districts. She also participated in China EXPO Convention and Exhibition Complex project located in Shanghai near Hongqiao international airport, which is a 1.47 million square meters complex building containing exhibition, meeting, office, commercial and hotel.
She has also done a large amount of research, such as participating in editing the Architectural Handbook and National Design code for parking garage building. She is a Beijing building energy evaluation expert and Visiting Professor at Beijing Architectural Engineering University.
