On Monday, May 2, four top structural engineers and architects meet at the School of Architecture to discuss engineering and creativity.
Marc Mimram, Laurent Ney, Mike Schlaich, and Mutsuro Sasaki will discuss lessons learned from design competitions, the challenges facing the next generations of their design studios, and more with Olek Niewiarowski, Sharon Xu, and Aaron Yin – students from the School of Architecture and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
This panel discussion at the SoA is an extension of the April 30 symposium at the Museum of Modern Art, Structured Lineages: Learning from Japanese Structural Design. Organized by Guy Nordenson and MoMA, the symposium is offered in conjunction with the exhibition A Japanese Constellation: Toyo Ito, SANAA, and Beyond and features seven leading structural engineers speaking on Japanese structural design from 1950.

The exhibition focuses on the network of architects and designers that has developed around Pritzker Prize winners Toyo Ito and SANAA. Providing an overview of Ito’s career and his influence as a mentor to a new generation of Japanese architects, the exhibition presents recent works by internationally acclaimed designers, including Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa, Sou Fujimoto, Akihisa Hirata, and Junya Ishigami.
