"Garden State" is often used to describe New Jersey with a sense of irony, but the nickname is less a myth than a testament to the complex and often contradictory identity of a state that is both the densest in the US as well as the most dispersed. Taking the form of an atlas, Garden [City] State outlines a new strategy of mobility and development that aims to limit the effects of sprawl across the state. With a particular focus on the southern half of New Jersey, this collection of essays, maps, and collages proposes a new "slow infrastructure" that weaves together towns along the perimeter of the protected Pinelands region in order to direct growth and conserve the state's environmental resources.
