Sean Canty is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design and the founder of Studio Sean Canty, an architecture practice that choreographs unconventional relationships between spaces of contemplation and collective gathering. Canty is also one of the founding principals of Office III, an experimental architectural collective that was selected as a finalist for the 2016 MoMA PS1 Young Architects competition, completed a Welcome Center for Governors Island, and exhibited work at the Museum of Modern Art. In recent news, Canty is a recipient of the 2023 Arts and Letters Award in Architecture for work that is characterized by a strong personal direction, and will be one of the participating practitioners in The Laboratory of the Future at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale.
Canty’s work and writing have been featured in domus, Harvard Design Magazine, MAS Context, and most recently in BLANK: Speculations on CLT (January 2023) and the forthcoming publication Inscriptions: Architecture Before Speech (May 2023). He has received the 2020 Richard Rogers Fellowship at Harvard GSD and has held teaching positions at the Cooper Union, the University of California Berkeley, and California College of the Arts. Canty received an M.Arch from Harvard GSD and a B.Arch from California College of the Arts.
