Professor Beatriz Colomina was awarded an honorary doctorate from KTH Royal Institute of Technology on November 16th in the Stockholm Concert Hall. “Professor Beatriz Colomina is a central figure in contemporary architectural theory and history. She has renewed the view of modernism and has contributed to a broader field by placing architecture in a dynamic relationship with technology, gender, consumption, and contemporary society’s transformation,” the university’s citation reads. “[Colomina’s] research was widely introduced to Swedish architecture, design, and media culture in the mid-1990s. The dissemination of Colomina's texts and her visits to KTH and in other significant Swedish architectural and art contexts has had great influence the development of education, research, and theory in this area at KTH and in Sweden.”

The honorary doctorates are conferred during the annual conferment of doctoral degrees and inauguration of new professors, KTH’s largest ceremonial event. The ceremony is primarily intended for those who have recently completed their postgraduate studies and earned their doctoral degree as well as newly-appointed professors at KTH. The ceremony has existed since 1927 at KTH, but has developed as a tradition within academia over the course of centuries.
